Hello,

I’m Sam.

Researcher, Educator, Marketer

Who am I?

My name is Sam (she/her) and I am an early-career academic based in Christchurch, New Zealand. I have been working and studying in the field of marketing and consumer behaviour for 10 years in industry and academia.

I am passionate about intersectional social and environmental issues and how they relate to consumption. My work focuses on how we can use marketing tools to bring about change for the better—for people, animals and the planet.

When I am not teaching or working on research you will find me trying to teach my cats tricks, geeking out over my latest sci-fi/fantasy addiction, exploring nature, or working on creative projects.

What do I do?

I conduct research on intersectional environmental and social issues through a marketing and consumption lens. This includes issues such as climate change, population and reproductive attitudes, meat consumption and plant-based diets, advertising and consumer well-being.

Consumption

Many of the challenges we face today stem from overconsumption. Marketers have had a big part to play in creating and exacerbating these issues and it is marketers that can address them.

Inequity

Issues associated with equity and diversity can be found in all disciplines and marketing is no exception. Yet marketing offers us effective tools to encourage pro-social behaviour.

Sustainability

While perceived as antithetical to sustainability, marketing is fundamental in shifting global consumption behaviours towards those that are better for the planet and its inhabitants.

How can I help?

I am pursuing consultancy and collaboration opportunities that will help me do my part to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future for all of us. If what you are looking for isn’t listed below get in touch and let’s chat about how I can help you and your organisation.

Research

I am available for conducting and/or collaborating on research projects for academic and professional clients. I utilise mixed methods to address topics such as sustainability, gender, future of food, and social marketing.

I am available for online and offline guest teaching including lectures and workshops. My teaching expertise lies in consumer behaviour, marketing principles, social marketing, market research, and marketing ethics.

Engagement

I am open to engagement opportunities in academia, industry and the community. This can include guest talks, panel discussion, guest writing, media commentary, and conference/journal review.
